Celestia allows users to travel through an extensive universe, modeled after reality, at any speed, in any direction, and at any time in history. Celestia displays and interacts with objects ranging in scale from small spacecraft to entire galaxies in three dimensions using OpenGL, from perspectives which would not be possible from a classic planetarium or other ground-based display.
NB : A number of excellent free add-ons for Celestia are available at the celestiamotherlode.
Space Engine
Space Engine – Is a free space simulation program that lets you explore the universe in three dimensions, from planet Earth to the most distant galaxies. Areas of the known universe are represented using actual astronomical data, while regions uncharted by astronomy are generated procedurally. Millions of galaxies, trillions of stars, countless planets – all available for exploration. You can land any planet, moon or asteroid and watch alien landscapes and celestial phenomena. You can even pilot starships and atmospheric shuttles.
Stage 9
Stage 9 – AKA – A Virtual Recreation Of The Star Ship Enterprise D, The ultimate goal for Stage 9 was to allow you to explore the sets of Star Trek The Next Generation in a detailed virtual recreation, it has subsequently become so much more, as it is now a walk through, game, SIM and VR experience allowing you to fully explore the Star Ship Enterprise NCC – 1701 D in full 3D and VR as never before, and best of all it’s totally free! It is being built in Unreal Engine 4 because it’s one of the most user-friendly and powerful game engine platforms available today. All of the sets are in and working with ever increasing details in each, including some subtle easter eggs and different things to interact with in each room. Some of the LCARS displays can be interacted with allowing you to perform various actions in the game by pressing buttons on the displays. For now, it’s a walk through, it may become a game, but for now, we’re limiting our efforts to SIM / walk through for PC, Mac, VR headsets, and possibly Linux.
NB : As of Wednesday 12th Sep 2018 the Stage 9 Project Team received a Cease and Desist order from CBS requiring them to cease development.
Outerra
Outerra, is a 3D planetary engine for seamless planet rendering from space down to the surface of the planet, it can use arbitrary resolution of elevation data, refining it to a centimeter resolution using fractal algorithms. In development since 2008.The engine renders high-quality terrain, texturing, flora and water flow, normal maps using relatively sparse and highly compressed data through fractal processing and other types of procedural generation. A combination of unlimited visibility, progressive download of data, procedural content generation and integrated vehicle and aircraft physics engines along with an embedded web browser for web service integration and more, have made this a very popular SIM / Engine for earth and space, and best of all the base package is free to download and use.

ROS
The Robot Operating System (ROS) is a flexible framework for writing robot software. It is a collection of tools, libraries, and conventions that aim to simplify the task of creating complex and robust robot behavior across a wide variety of robotic platforms. Why? Because creating truly robust, general-purpose robot software is hard. From the robot’s perspective, problems that seem trivial to humans often vary wildly between instances of tasks and environments. Dealing with these variations is so hard that no single individual, laboratory, or institution can hope to do it on their own. As a result, ROS was built from the ground up to encouragecollaborative robotics software development. For example, one laboratory might have experts in mapping indoor environments, and could contribute a world-class system for producing maps. Another group might have experts at using maps to navigate, and yet another group might have discovered a computer vision approach that works well for recognizing small objects in clutter. ROS was designed specifically for groups like these to collaborate and build upon each other’s work, as is described throughout this site.
